It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone
I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.
Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.
That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!
Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015
It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.
In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.
I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.
This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)
I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.
This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)
Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.
More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.
Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.
There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.
I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.
I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

The Zolas
Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski united with new members Cody Hiles and Dwight Abell, and the Zolas began touring again during mid-2015. In January 2016, the band released a new single, "Swooner", to announce its third studio album of the same name, which was released on March 4, 2016.
what do you see on the other side?
We caught up with Zachary Gray, Lead Singer/Guitarist from The Zolas from his hometown in Vancouver this past week :
Thanks for taking the time to speak with us at Sunleadsme as we also launched in early 2016, and of course welcome home to Vancouver. What do you do to reconnect when you come home?
" I just had dinner with my folks last night and have 4 or 5 days off now. Then we are on last show of this recent tour on Friday in Victoria."
Tell me about how the supporters of your bands evolution in sound, how have they responded to the new album Swooner?
"Everyone has been really into it. People have asked whether we deliberately tried to go for a poppier sound.'
It’s definitely different.
"Yah, people really seem to like it, a lot of our fans are the kind of fans that like our music for the lyrics and the lyrics are really strong on this one so everyone was pretty happy with it."
This album is very strong lyrically, I personally like Frieda on the Mountain best, that’s probably my favourite track on this new album where did you guys write it?
… And the show was great !
With hits like Get Dark, CVDazzle and mainly newer tracks from The Album “Swooner” released earlier this year, the crowd literally went wild.
The Zolas engaged with the young crowd in a way not often seen in a venue like Sugar Nightclub, in Victoria. As Zach and Dwight Abell (Bass) would stand high up into the crowd on a platform from the stage not in an intrusive or aggressive manor but rather troubadours sharing a lyrical story with the fans, then jumping back to the stage in a revolving play.
Fans that knew all the words often finishing the songs the interaction was passionate with tracks more widely known like I fell in love in NY, Molotov Girls everyone got down and grooved. 2012 Album Ancient Mars hit got a shout out as well as favourites like Knot in my Heart and Strange Girls.
As hoped for Frieda on The Mountain got the team and the room jumping with excitement ! A couple in front of us made out during the whole set while also singing along with great joy, awkward yet somehow fitting with the energy ... Just buzzing with love and support for this West Coast Group.
This show was an absolute joy and an added bonus that Louise Burns was the opening act they too really hit it and were truly applauded and well received.
Looking forward to the next show and of course Aidan Knight's performance on April 30th!
Tour strategy seems to be the toughest part for many artisits, we interview. Finiting their program, keeping it tight together into the routine while still finding the joy in the sets every night too with the grind.
"It's nice when every audience is different, when your used to playing the same set every night all the little changes are things that you notice, and that’s what makes it exciting, like oh there’s this one moment in the break down of the fifth song where something where someone improvises something and it was really great and everyone remembers that and talks about afterwards, maybe we'll do it again. It's fun, to hoan down a show, and have it get better every single time, w’eve been on tour for the last this three weeks , so we are almost getting to the point where it’s a nicely honed instrument of a show."
I have to tell you last night I played your music for my Partner who grew up in South Africa in the 80’s where exposure to music was 20 years behind so he has never been a big a fan of evolving or newer indie music as much from the past few decades. He has been quite sheltered in the genres of Artists like Black Uhuru, UB40, and New Order , who we actually saw together at the Queen Elizabeth a couple of years ago, in Vancouver - but he was so excited and blown away when he heard your music.
"No way, that’s cool."
Thank you, finally another band we can listen too together as a family, its very exciting. We were listening to some of your older tracks yesterday too and even the kids were enjoying it in the car and it has been exciting to connect through music as a family like that. When it’s not so polluted that even children can get into it.
"That’s great."
As touring bands you get exposed to so many other Artists and sounds on the road then you find out what they like and can get introduced to a new chapter in music ,, its interesting. Who are you listening too or into right now ?
" Good question, I’m Listening to the newest Aidan Knight Album. (Each Other , 2016)
We are heading to that show at Lucky Bar April 30th in Victoria !
"Oh that’s going to be Pandamonium.
I am listening to a lot of hip hop lately, like Vince Staples and I also picked up the band Bloc Party’s debut album , Silent Alarm (2005), and I hadn’t heard it in so long and I have been listening to it not stop for a couple of days, because I forgot how, it is one of the best albums of that decade, I think. ."
( A special thank you to Zach for re-introducing Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm to the Sunleadsme playlist “Banquet” and “ This Modern Love” The Riff at the start resembles a couple of HMR tracks are now on repeat in the studio )
I heard you also like a lot of Velvet underground influences ?
"I like my Lou Reed quite a bit, Velvet Underground I never really got into but do like bands that were influenced from that, for sure."
I am really excited for your upcoming show and the next at the Pemberton Festival. Will you guys also come back to Rifflandia Festival this year ?
"Oh ya of course. Really looking forward to Fridays show its going to be great..."
The Zolas performing Sugar Nightclub April , 2016
"Cool, mine too. It was a demo in my computer for a long time I think I’d been sitting on it for almost a year before we started working on it. It was a fun one because we didn’t really know at all what it was going to sound like and we didn’t really play any real instruments, in it (Laughs), it was almost all in the computer, (Is that true yah its kind of true) some computer and a bunch of synths and a little bit of guitar, but even some of the guitar sounds as well. This song was an anomaly, Freida On The Mountain came together in the studio and is one of our favourites as well."
Are you guys going back into the studio now that you have down time or taking a break?
"Taking a break, we have bunch of little ideas but don’t have any full songs have a lot to record right now."
Any collaborations?
"We all work on stuff when we are not actively working on The Zolas. I am sure we will all be collaborating with other people."
I read that Tom enjoys producing, and has a studio that he built that evolved after the one he started in his parent’s basement is that right?
"He still uses that one but he built a much bigger much more sexier one in East Vancouver, it’s an incredible facility."
He produced Hey Ocean and a few other bands?
"Yes and lots other Artists as well."
(Tom Dobrzanski Piano/keyboardist, Record Producer and owner of Monarch Studios , has recorded albums for local bands such as Said the Whale, Hey Ocean!, We Are the City and more In 2013, Dobrzanski received a Juno Award nomination for Said the Whale's Little Mountain. )
Are you mentoring any Young artists?
"God no, Tom might be."
Have you been mentored by an Artists?
"I don’t think so, we have friends in bands that are younger and older than us, You could call it mentoring , I guess, but I think its just being buddies, were good friends with Steve Bays whose from Hot Hot Heat, and Mounties, he actually mixed half the songs on our album, He’s a few years older and has been through a lot of really good stuff in the music business and is great to talk to.
But I don’t think we have a yoda figure for our band at all."
