It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone
I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.
Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.
That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!
Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015
It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.
In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.
I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.
This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)
I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.
This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)
Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.
More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.
Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.
There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.
I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.
I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

FRASE is a soulful singer/ songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer originally from Montreal now living in BC,
This ARTist entrances with a melange of Hip-Hop, Soul, Dub reggae and Blues with hints of modern dance grooves, Garage, and House to stir the musical pot. A world travelled musical and visual ARTist who encompasses a rich drama on stage while keeping the vibe upbeat and positive. He has performed feature sets in Clubs, Festivals, Lofts, Cafes & supported acts such as Dub FX, Bonobo, Fat Boy Slim & Noisia and The Funk Hunters.
The energetic live performance dazzled supporters at both the Atmosphere Gathering (Cumberland) last summer 2017 where we first experienced his music live and then more recently at the Capital Ballroom in Victoria BC at Christmas.
I ask FRASE about his recent album, FRnZ, (2017) and the sort of themes he explores in it, his travels, touring and what inspires him most.SLM: We really enjoyed your set at The Capital Ballroom with the Funk Hunters this winter,
FRASE: It’s going great, it’s more of a tour for them and I just came down from Nelson (BC) It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of driving. I am very excited to play at the Commodore tonight, it’s so legendary and looking forward to the next two nights in a row.
SLM: We highlighted your performance at Atmosphere Gathering (Cumberland #ATMO2017), in our Summer issue which had an amazing energy. Do you prefer a club or festival setting, and how does your music resonate with both audience?
FRASE: I like festivals I have never really been a club person per se, but I love playing outside, that is the one thing festivals have that clubs don’t. That space for people to roam and dance in the grass and things like that.
SLM: Your latest album, FRnZ (Convoy Music Group), you worked with several different producers. The Weight (feat. Sickflip) the opener of the album so great, tell us about this track and collaboration.
FRASE: That was the first one that I did for this album. In 2015 (Listen to Daggers and Shields - EP 2015 ) I went to India to help a friend with a street ART project. He had a bunch of
SLM: It sounds like ’’Breakfast in Bombay’’ could be a pretty cool title for a track (both laugh), could be the name for another song too. “She Said”, I love this song, featuring Dead Horse Beats (
P. Tinham 12.21.15
FRASE: All of the bicycle shots are all filmed in Firenze Italy, and those guys that I am biking with are friends of mine and also the guys who produced the track. There’s Leonard P of NUMA CREW which is pretty big dub and bass crew out of Italy, and then there is Ckrono, who is half Japanese half Italian who does more tropical DC/Diplo kind of stuff, so it was interesting for all of us to work on it and all of those kinds of sounds come out on this song.
SLM: "This Road", is that indigenous music in there?
FRASE: It’s funny that you mention that. I sampled a pygmy tribe and those sounds are vocals from a tribe in South Africa. I have chopped it up and made it more rhythmic, that’s actually from Bill Laswell (http://billlaswell.net/biography.html), sample recording of when he was there He’s got some crazy field recordings from when he was in Sought Africa, bring a microphone and record all these crazy sounds. I would love to give more credit to them and that is a big part of the song But I don’t even know where they are from or who they are. There is something spiritual and soulful in it that speaks to everybody and I am showcasing that, and I researched and tried to give them credit but I just can’t connect there.
SLM: “FRnZ”, super radio friendly and positive where was this one written?
FRASE: That one was in Italy too; you can actually hear the birds in the background at the beginning that were in my window too. One particular morning I woke up at 4 AM to the sounds of those birds and I had an idea in my head for a song and I just started recording, and that song FRnZ was written and recorded with all the instruments by noon. I played around with it but that original idea was and recording was best and that is what you hear.
SLM: Tell us about the title FRnZ for the Album?
FRASE: Firenze, Italy is where I lived and stayed for a couple of months while writing, and if you say this name of the city (with accent) fast it sounds like FRnZ and if you take all the vowels out it spells FRnZ so then when I wrote this song in there and that is where this came from.
SLM: “I’ve Been in It”, a sultry song and the first video from FRnZ, as well, was this video filmed all over Europe and are where are you guys on those bicycles in Europe? (Video filmed by Veronica Burlando, Gianluca Larlori & Matt Pidutti from
Breakfast in Bombay
F R n Z (Officially released Oct 20th, 2017 with support from Convoy Music Group, FRNZ features Producers and Artists from around the world including Sickflip,
FRASE: Dead Horse Beats has his own version of the "She Said" as well. That was one that I did in Montreal before I moved, and DHB is a friend of mine from there. He had sent me a couple of beats that he had been working on and I came up with the vocals for it. As most tracks do it evolved and changed a lot and went back and forth a lot in terms of what he wanted it to sound like and he put his own version and I liked it but I thought it could go beyond so I took some of his synths from the original track and re-did it and made my own version of the song.
SLM: “
FRASE: It’s very hard to pigeonhole myself into a certain style. I feel like I am trying to come up with a Vibe, It might be more up-tempo, down-tempo, it might be more House or Blues but there is always going to be a signature soulfulness that I can give. “Holdin” was written in Australia at ARTist Dub FX’s house, I recorded my first EP there. That was a song where I was just jamming on acoustic guitar on his beautiful porch overlooking the rainforest and didn’t get around to recording it for another year. That happens a lot where I might play it for a few people they might really like then I forget about it for a while and then come back to it again until I have a reason or a mission to record. That is really what this Album FRNZ is, a collection of random songs from over the past four years and finally wanted to sit down and finish them and with the aim to complete this Album for last year.
SLM: Traveling through the album the tracks slowdown from “Serotonin” to “Karma”, ”Make My Bed”, "Take You Away" to “Night Light”, more chill and I feel the electro there most. You toured with Moontricks, who worked with on this one, what was that experience like?
FRASE: I have to be so thankful to Moontricks (Headlining upcoming Phillips Backyard Weekender 2018), because they really put me onto, the B.C scene. They are super well known and they really brought me in under their wing and had me open for them with 17 shows across B.C. and exposed me to some amazing people like their supporters who are some of the coolest people.
While we were on tour we tried to think of a way we could do a song together, they have this track called “Watch Ya Want” which is basically that guitar riff which I use for Night Light. Originally they sent me the beat saying can you write a song for this beat, I did and I was working on something but I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with it and I took the same chord progression and I was working on the piano way slower than the actual song, then I wrote the all the words and then I thought I had it, until I tried to record the same vocal over their beat and it just wasn’t as good as when it was on piano. So I stripped out all the other stuff and just kept the guitar for that track and slowed it down and then put piano over it. We are hoping to have their own version of this song where I have left out some lyrics, should be released soon.
SLM: That’s a great way to collaborate!
FRASE: Yeah I feel like with the digital world of music there is just much that is possible now. Now you can have the remix, acoustic and original version out there. If it is a really good song then you can bring it into production and go deep in the digital world with it.
SLM: Your Album cover is eclectic like your music tell us about the ART for it?
FRASE: The ARTist is awesome he is from Belgium, 13Pulsions (13 Pulsions is a Colombian/Italian contemporary artist currently living in Brussels) His practice ranges from illustration to music, animation, clothes, installations, books, and serigraphy to create a coherent yet eclectic body of work.) artist I had seen a couple of Album covers that he had done for friends of mine and I really liked his style, his graphic art is very interesting and this really was a stretch for him as I demanded more from him than most for the Album cover. I wanted to tell the story there is some of BC, Italy, India and where I was to create this album.
So excited to see Frase live again and in his element locally MARCH 9th at
